Austria reverse early deficit to gain edge over Beitar Jerusalem
In the Ilie‑Oana Stadium in Ploiesti, Austria faced a Fehlstart Partie against Beitar Jerusalem, trailing after 19 minutes but rallying to a 2‑1 (1‑1) Erfolg thanks to goals from Vasilje Markovic and Joker Sanel Saljic. The Austrian side, known as the Veilchen, turned the Begegnung around after an early Rückstand and secured a favourable Ausgangsposition for the return leg.
The Israeli Vizemeister opened the Spiel in the ninth minute when Noam Muche (19) slipped past Austria‑goalkeeper Samuel Sahin‑Radlinger, giving the Israelis a swift lead and confirming their status as six‑time Meister. That early concession illustrated Austria’s weak Start and set the tone for a tense first half.
Markovic equalised at the half‑hour mark, his first goal in an Austria shirt, and Saljic, the Joker of the match, struck the winner in the 69th minute after a second‑half Leistungssteigerung. Their strikes not only erased the Rückstand but also highlighted the Veilchen’s attacking resolve in the Qualifikationsrunde of the Conference‑League.
Defence chief Aleksandar Dragovic, who had suffered a Gehirnerschütterung, returned to the field in the 63rd minute wearing a Kopfschutz, while veteran Reinhold Ranftl began on the bench. Striker Johannes Eggestein did not travel to Rumänien, and the Israelis fielded Shon Weissman, a former WAC forward, in the attacking line.
Beitar controlled the early phases with four Teenager players, creating a Großchance in the ninth minute. Weissman, the 2019/20 Bundesliga Torschützenkönig for the WAC, forced a save from Sahin‑Radlinger before Muche capitalised on the rebound to restore the lead.
After the halftime break, Austria’s Helm‑team improved markedly following the substitutions of Ranftl and Florian Wustinger. Kelvin Boateng produced a fine chance at the 55th minute, and Julian Hettwer’s shot forced a save before the Austrian side pressed higher up the pitch.
Saljic’s decisive strike came after a swift counter‑attack, placing the ball in the long corner and sealing the 2‑1 Erfolg. Moritz Wels, introduced later, missed two clear chances in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, while the Beitar offensive faded in the closing stages.
The match concluded with Austria in control, setting up a Rückspiel in Wien on 13 August at 20:30. The upcoming encounter will decide whether the Veilchen advance to the Play‑off, where Sporting Braga or Dinamo Minsk await the winner.
