Audacious Ajax target Twente right‑back as Wolves walk away
On a rainy afternoon at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Ajax scouts huddled over a screen showing FC Twente’s right‑back Bart van Rooij, a player once monitored by Wolverhampton Wanderers, as the Dutch club looks to reinforce a defence that shone in a strong Eredivisie campaign.
Ajax, described as "Audacious" in recent reports, are keen to add depth after finishing the season with a solid defensive record in the Eredivisie. The club believes Van Rooij’s profile fits the tactical blueprint of their back line.
Van Rooij recorded three goals and five assists across 33 league appearances last season, statistics that underline his offensive contribution from a defensive position. Those numbers placed him among the most productive full‑backs in the Dutch top flight.
His performances helped the Tukkers secure fourth place in the Eredivisie, a finish that marked a significant achievement for the club. The right‑back’s work rate and crossing ability were cited as key factors in Twente’s strong league position.
Rots dismisses Ajax link, confirms Bart van Rooij stays
Two years ago, Van Rooij arrived at FC Twente from NEC for a fee of around €900,000, a sum now viewed as a bargain given his development. The transfer from NEC marked the start of his rise in Dutch football.
Twente previously turned down an approach from Wolverhampton Wanderers, who later redirected their interest to AZ’s David Moller Wolfe. The English club’s pursuit of the Dutch right‑back faded after the rejection.
Ajax Technical Director Jordi Cruijff has already opened talks with the player, and the first conversation between Ajax and Van Rooij has taken place. The outlet claims, “Van Rooij has been closely monitored by Ajax over the past few months and is highly regarded at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.”
FC Twente rebuffs Ajax rumors, cites €10 million Van Rooij valuation
If the move materialises, Van Rooij is expected to replace Anton Gaaei, whose proposed transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt collapsed at the last minute. Ajax see the defender as a direct solution to the vacancy left by Gaaei.
Twente value Van Rooij at roughly €10 million, a price Ajax consider excessive, prompting Feyenoord to withdraw their interest over the same asking fee. Despite the valuation, the defender remains under contract in Enschede until the summer of 2028, giving Ajax time to negotiate a deal.
