Aston Villa’s Asian boost: Japanese keeper Akane Okuma signs

The 21‑year‑old Japanese international goalkeeper Akane Okuma has signed for Aston Villa, with WSL Full-Time confirming the move via an official Villans press release this morning, as she leaves INAC Kobe Leonessa after a runner‑up league campaign and narrowly missing the WE League Cup and Empress’s Cup.

She helped INAC Kobe Leonessa finish runner‑up in the 2024/2025 SOMPO WE League. The side also narrowly missed out on the WE League Cup and the Empress’s Cup that season.

The club had secured the league title in the previous term. That achievement underscored its status as a top Japanese side.

Okuma recently broke into Japan’s senior national team, earning four caps. She was part of the Nadeshiko squad that won the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, highlighting her Asian pedigree. Earlier she featured regularly in Japan’s youth sides.

“I’m very happy to be here. I feel really fortunate to be a part of this club, and I can’t wait to play with the team,” Okuma said after sealing her move.

The signing marks Aston Villa’s seventh addition in what has become a very busy transfer window for the Villans. Villa have been active in strengthening multiple positions ahead of the new season.

Villa’s recruitment drive aims to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming WSL campaign. The club hopes the new arrivals will improve depth and competition.

Okuma’s arrival gives the club a goalkeeper with experience at the highest domestic level in Japan and international exposure with Japan. Her background includes competing in the top tier of the SOMPO WE League.
