Aston Villa adds Wan-Bissaka as sixth summer signing amid exodus

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has joined Aston Villa from West Ham United on a season‑long loan, a move announced by the Birmingham club on Friday as they continue reshaping a squad that finished fourth last season and will look markedly different from the team that secured that fourth‑place finish.

Villa completes squad overhaul

Wan-Bissaka is the sixth major summer acquisition for Aston Villa. The club has already seen Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne depart, marking a clear exodus from Villa Park.

Ezri Konsa was on the verge of a move to Arsenal, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez may also leave, potentially adding a fifth departure to the list.

Primarily a wing‑back, Wan-Bissaka will take over part of Konsa’s duties and can also operate as a centre‑back or right‑back, providing competition for Matty Cash on the right flank. On the left, manager Unai Emery still has Ian Maatsen and Matteo Ruggeri to consider.

The DR Congo international broke through at Crystal Palace before earning a 2019 transfer to Manchester United. After 190 appearances for the Red Devils, he moved to West Ham in 2024, a season that ended with the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Wan-Bissaka becomes the latest player to leave the Championship, following the departures of Mateus Fernandes, Crycensio Summerville, Freddie Potts, Callum Wilson, Niclas Füllkrug and Adama Traoré.

He joins Villa on a season‑long loan that includes a conditional mandatory purchase option. Earlier loan signings such as Johan Manzambi, João Gomes, Zion Suzuki, Matteo Ruggeri and Alejandro Garnacho have already arrived at the Brummies.

Fans often refer to him simply as Wan. The deal was announced met with optimism, and De club looks forward to integrating him as the season progresses.
