Arthur's loan to Werder Bremen offers a route back to Brazil's national team
Twenty‑three‑year‑old Brazilian right‑back Arthur has swapped Bayer Leverkusen for Werder Bremen on a loan that runs until the end of the season. The move makes him a starter at the Weser Stadium, and he hopes a run of games will see him recalled to the Brazil national team after 31 appearances, two goals and three assists across all competitions last season.
Como the loan helps Arthur
Arthur left Bayer Leverkusen for Werder Bremen on a temporary deal that does not contain a purchase option, Werder Bremen’s director of football, said: “Arthur is a player who can help us immediately. He knows the Bundesliga well and has already shown his quality at the highest level.”
Speaking in Portuguese, the 23‑year‑old added: “Sei que, com uma sequência de jogos, boas atuações e ajudando o Werder dentro de campo, posso voltar a ser lembrado.” He also declared the loan a “momento importante da minha carreira” and reiterated his ambition to return to the Seleção Brasileira.
Career background and future ambitions
Arthur arrived in Europe in 2023 after starring in Brazil’s South American Under‑20 Championship and making his senior debut under Ramon Menezes. At Bayer Leverkusen he amassed 64 Bundesliga appearances, scoring two goals, providing six assists and completing 236 defensive actions. He also featured in 31 matches during the 2025/26 campaign, adding two goals and three assists in the league, the German Cup and the Champions League.
In 2023 he signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen that extends his stay until 2031, even as the loan to Werder Bremen excludes a buying clause. The extension signals the German club’s belief in his long‑term potential.
Competition for the right‑back spot at Leverkusen has intensified, with Lucas Vázquez and Guéla Doué preferred by new coach Carles Martínez. This limited his chances, prompting the loan move.
Werder Bremen are rebuilding after a turbulent 2025/26 season that saw them battle relegation. Alongside Arthur, the club has secured striker Niclas Füllkrug from West Ham and taken left‑back Moussa Ndiaye on loan from Anderlecht.
Coach Daniel Thioune praised Arthur’s attributes, stating: “His quality will allow a quick adaptation. He is fast, technically strong and can contribute to our offensive play.” Arthur becomes the eleventh Brazilian to wear the Werder Bremen shirt, joining former players such as Diego, Naldo and Aílton.
The loan offers Arthur regular Bundesliga minutes, a chance to showcase his speed and technical ability, and, crucially, an opportunity to re‑enter the Brazil national team conversation.
