Arteta plays bad cop as Saka endures criticism ahead of Sunderland

The floodlights blaze over the Stadium of Light as Arsenal prepare for a Saturday night clash with Sunderland, having opened the season with three straight Premier League victories, including a striking win over Chelsea, and a Champions League triumph secured by Martin Odegaard’s late goal.

Three wins and a Champions League start

Arsenal, known as the Gunners, have recorded three wins from three Premier League fixtures, highlighted by a dominant performance against Chelsea last weekend. Their European campaign also began positively, with Martin Odegaard scoring the decisive goal to secure a Champions League victory. Sunderland sit on four points from four games, and will provide a stern test.

Former winger Jermaine Pennant launched a scathing assessment of Bukayo Saka, calling the England international overrated and accusing him of “getting away with murder” when his statistical output is examined. Pennant told GOAL that world‑class players must back their reputation with numbers, citing Mohamed Salah’s consistent contributions as a benchmark.

Mikel Arteta has found himself fielding uncomfortable questions about former Arsenal forwards Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli. Jesus, who departed for Barcelona at the close of the transfer window, claimed he was isolated from the squad, prompting Arteta to adopt a “bad cop” stance in the dressing‑room.

Arteta adopts the bad‑cop role

Arteta explained, “Sometimes you have to deliver bad news, and somebody has to be the bad cop. If I have to be, I have to be.” He added that he had an individual talk with Jesus, focusing on gratitude despite the tension.

The manager also referenced Leandro Trossard’s presence in the stands during the Chelsea win as evidence of the club’s ongoing bond with former players, even though Trossard was sold to Besiktas in July. Trossard’s former teammates greeted him warmly, underscoring the club’s inclusive culture.

Ian Wright’s recent comment that Arteta was “uncomfortable” with the perceived lack of dialogue surrounding Gabriel Martinelli, who moved to Al Hilal earlier this month, further fueled speculation about squad harmony. Martinelli’s move to Al Hilal marks his first foray into the Saudi Pro League.

With momentum building and off‑field narratives swirling, Arsenal aim to extend their unbeaten run and cement their status as early season frontrunners as they travel to Sunderland on Saturday. ARSENAL supporters will be watching closely, and the End of the week will see the Gunners strive to maintain their perfect record.
