Arsenal VAR error sparks Arteta fury after Sunderland penalty
The champions secured a 2-0 victory at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Saturday, yet the Premier League’s admission that the Arsenal VAR decision awarding a penalty was wrong has left Mikel Arteta fuming and the Gunners questioning officiating standards in a match that could have swung the momentum.
Penalty controversy unfolds
The champions arrived at the Stadium of Light on Saturday September 12. The first half ended goalless before a contentious decision in the 48th minute. Gunners defender Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Sunderland’s Dan Ballard during a corner, with referee John Brooks pointing to the spot.
Enzo Le Fee stepped up to take the penalty but David Raya saved it. Less than two minutes later Bruno Guimaraes struck to give Arsenal the lead. Bukayo Saka added a second goal later in the match, sealing a 2-0 win.
The victory restored Arsenal’s momentum, but the penalty incident continued to dominate post‑match discussion.

Panel verdict and Arteta's reaction
The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel unanimously ruled that Sunderland’s penalty should not have been awarded. Their statement noted that, although the challenge was untidy, Ballard also engaged in a holding action that pulled Konsa to the ground.
The five‑person panel gave a narrow 3‑2 majority to VAR official Stuart Attwell for not intervening, concluding the error was not clear and obvious. This finding contradicted the on‑field decision.
After the match, Mikel Arteta said the call was ‘unacceptable at this level’ and warned it could change the course of a season. He added that, after almost 27 years in football, he had never seen a penalty of this nature and described it as a ‘judo roll’.
The Premier League later confirmed that the Arsenal VAR error had been admitted, reinforcing Arteta’s frustration and highlighting the governing body’s willingness to review contentious incidents.
