Arsenal teen’s midfield ambition fuels United and Chelsea interest
Man Utd and Chelsea are both eyeing Arsenal’s 19‑year‑old midfielder Myles Lewis‑Skelly as they look to plug creative gaps after recent signings, with United hoping to add a versatile No 6/No 8 alongside Bruno Fernandes and Chelsea seeking depth under Xabi Alonso.
Lewis‑Skelly’s minutes at the Emirates have been limited, and the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes has intensified competition for central spots, leaving the teenager with a narrow pathway to a regular starting berth at Arsenal.
United’s midfield gap
Michael Carrick’s side at Old Trafford are actively searching for a midfielder and a left‑back before the summer window closes; Lewis‑Skelly can cover both roles but has made clear his preference for a No 6 or No 8 position.
United already have Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo in the squad, while Bruno Fernandes occupies the advanced play‑maker slot, leaving limited central spots for a new addition.
Chelsea’s midfield options
Chelsea’s midfield partnership of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo is regarded as one of the league’s best, with Fernandez linked to a possible exit but Xabi Alonso keen to retain him.
Beyond that duo, the Blues also have Romeo Lavia and Reece James capable of stepping into central roles, creating a competitive environment for any newcomer.
Lewis‑Skelly began his Arsenal career at left‑back before expressing ambitions to move centrally; he started the Champions League final in May alongside Declan Rice in midfield. Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, he said: “My best position is either a No 6 or No 8. I’m not too sure yet, but I’m just continuing to try my best to master both. Whatever it takes, I’m ready to play in the [No] 6 or [No] 8 role.”
He agreed a new contract last summer but could still move to another Premier League side. There is no indication yet whether United or the Blues will act on Arsenal’s offer, leaving the next steps uncertain as both clubs balance existing midfield depth with the desire to secure a young, versatile talent.
