Arsenal seek Pro Ref explanation after controversial Konsa penalty

Arsenal’s 2‑0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday kept the Premier League leaders on course, but the win has been clouded by a disputed penalty against defender Ezri Konsa, prompting manager Mikel Arteta to vow that the club will contact English refereeing body Pro Ref for an explanation.

The incident and VAR decision

Inside the penalty area, Konsa and Sunderland captain Dan Ballard became entangled, and referee John Brooks immediately pointed to the spot. The decision was then reviewed by the video assistant referee, which confirmed the penalty.

Arteta described Ballard’s action as a “judo roll”, arguing that the defender was dragged onto the attacker rather than committing a foul. He insisted the call was “unacceptable at this level”.

Arteta’s reaction and next steps

In the post‑match interview, the manager, who was booked for leaving his technical area, said: “It is unacceptable at this level. Unacceptable.” He added that he had watched the incident “10 times” and “20 times” and could not understand the rationale.

Despite the controversy, Arsenal’s performance was strong: David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s effort from 12 yards, Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring two minutes in, and Bukayo Saka added a late spot‑kick after Reinildo Mandava was sent off.

The club issued a statement on 14 September 2026 confirming that it will contact Pro Ref for an explanation, recalling the body’s recent apology to Manchester United over a VAR error.

pundits Ashley Williams and Thomas Frank echoed Arteta’s view, calling the penalty “completely wrong” and likening Ballard’s challenge to a perfect hip‑toss in judo.

Arsenal will now hold talks with Pro Ref, seeking clarity on how referee John Brooks reached his decision and hoping to prevent similar incidents from influencing the championship race.
