Arsenal’s Saturday triumph at Sunderland shows champions’ authority
Arsenal secured a 2‑0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday night, with Bruno Guimaraes scoring the opener after David Raya denied a penalty in a tightly contested match. The win reinforces the champions’ claim to the Premier League title.
The Gunners had visited Wearside last November, scoring twice before Brian Brobbey’s late leveller erased the lead. That defeat had fuelled doubts over Arsenal’s title credentials. Saturday’s triumph therefore silenced those lingering concerns.
Arteta’s squad overhaul
Mikel Arteta made four changes to his starting eleven, mirroring the rotation he employed mid‑week at Napoli. He kept £360 million worth of replacements on the bench, ready to maintain intensity. At half‑time Bruno Guimaraes and Jurrien Timber replaced Miles Lewis‑Skelly and Ben White.
Regis Le Bris’s Sunderland pressed hard in the second half, with Ezri Konsa’s challenge on Dan Ballard conceding a soft penalty. David Raya, hailed as the Premier League’s best goalkeeper, saved Enzo Le Fee’s spot‑kick, keeping Arsenal level.
Raya’s saves and Guimaraes’s strike
Just 121 seconds after Raya’s left‑handed save, Guimaraes struck with a right‑footed finish to put Arsenal ahead. Two minutes later Bukayo Saka converted a penalty, extending the lead. Raya later denied Nordi Mukiele in added time, preserving the clean sheet.
Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard, Arsenal’s number 9 and 10, drifted right, offering Saka support and additional passing lanes. On the opposite flank Christos Tzolis and Riccardo Calafiori thrived, with Tzolis alleviating Arteta’s worries about a thin left side. Their performances added balance to the champion’s attack.
The victory dispelled the doubts that dogged Arsenal for months, confirming them as the only sure thing at the top of the Premier League this term. Compared with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, only Manchester City match Arsenal’s depth, yet the Gunners’ authority now appears unrivalled.
