Arsenal’s opening bid rebuffed, Newcastle guard midfield star

Newcastle United have lost several first‑team regulars this summer – Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and the costly Alexander Isak departure to Liverpool – leaving a clear void in midfield that only captain Bruno Guimaraes can fill. The club, now without a head coach after Eddie Howe’s exit, faces a strategic shift and needs a proven creator to anchor the side for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Arsenal’s first bid for the Brazil midfielder has been rejected, confirming that the Gunners’ opening offer did not meet Newcastle’s valuation. The Press Association direct lines of communication have now opened between the Premier League champions and the managerless Magpies.

A valuation gap remains, with Guimaraes having scored 31 goals in 195 matches since arriving from Lyon for £40 million in January 2022. Both clubs acknowledge the distance between their assessments of the player’s worth.

Guimaraes has indicated a desire to swap St James’ Park for the Emirates Stadium this summer, signalling his personal ambition to join the Gunners. His expressed wish adds pressure on Newcastle to resolve the transfer talks promptly.

The Magpies are still counting the cost of Isak’s protracted move to Liverpool and are wary of another high‑profile exit. Losing another first‑choice star would further destabilise a squad already in upheaval.

Newcastle are currently without a head coach following Howe’s departure on Friday, though they are understood to be close to appointing German Matthias Jaissle as his successor. The lack of a permanent manager complicates any immediate decision on a major sale.

Guimaraes is due to meet his teammates at a pre‑season training camp in La Manga on Monday, after an extended break post‑World Cup. He was scheduled to join the squad on Sunday, and the club has allowed him to arrive 24 hours later.

Meanwhile, the club’s fifth summer signing, goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, joined fellow new arrivals Ewen Jaouen, winger Bazoumana Toure and midfield pair Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, underscoring a summer of upheaval but also the need to retain core talent like Guimaraes.
