Arsenal's Max Dowman path shows United's risk with JJ Gabriel

Manchester United are set to lose England Under‑17 forward JJ Gabriel, who has asked to leave the club months after being named Player of the Season in the Under‑18 Premier League. The teenager’s departure comes as he continues to attract attention despite his limited senior experience.

Gabriel is only 15 years old, and observers note that “the truth is nobody should be taking an interest in anything he does”, underscoring how unusual his profile has become.

United’s missed opportunity

Man United have had chances to demonstrate faith in Gabriel and map a route to first‑team football, yet the youngster’s request to leave suggests those opportunities were not seized. The club could have offered him a place in the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton & Hove Albion, but he removed himself from contention.

When United prepared for their Champions League opener against Sabah, Gabriel was scoring a hat‑trick in the UEFA Youth League, highlighting his readiness for higher‑level exposure.

Arsenal’s blueprint with Max Dowman

Arsenal’s 16‑year‑old Max Dowman made his league debut at 15 and is now being tipped for a senior England call‑up, a stark contrast to Gabriel’s early stage.

Dowman has amassed six Premier League appearances, eight cup games and three Champions League outings, scoring twice in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup win at Ipswich Town, yet Arsenal have managed his development without over‑use.

United’s failure to replicate Arsenal’s measured approach may see them lose a prospect of huge potential, while Arsenal continue to reap the benefits of nurturing a talent already trusted in senior competition.
