Arsenal’s Martin Wiegdoe surge fuels midfield evolution under Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Norwegian midfielder Martin Wiegdoe after the midfielder’s powerful mid‑range strike in the 75th minute secured a 1‑0 victory over Napoli in the Champions League group‑stage opener, giving the Gunners three points away from home and marking his fourth goal in five competitive matches this season.

Statistical impact against Napoli

Squawka recorded that Wiegdoe touched the ball 120 times, created six chances and recovered five possessions during the Napoli match. He also generated two decisive opportunities, underlining his role as a central figure in Arsenal’s attack beyond the solitary goal.

Including the FA Community Shield, Wiegdoe has already found the net four times in five official games this campaign, highlighting a prolific start to his Arsenal tenure.

By contrast, he managed only a single goal across all official fixtures last season, a stark improvement that reflects his increased involvement in more dangerous areas of the pitch.

Midfield reshuffle boosts Wiegdoe

The arrival of new signing Bruno Guimaraes, alongside Declan Rice and Miles Lewis Skelley operating in deeper positions, has allowed Wiegdoe to concentrate on chance creation. Arteta noted that more players now transport the ball and help build attacks more effectively.

Arteta added: “He (Wiegdoe) can now play at a different height, especially in attack, and becomes a very dangerous player. To unsettle opponents you need various heights, angles and positions, and he does that exceptionally well.”

Wiegdoe reflected on his winning strike: “I didn’t see the moment, but it was a good goal. The defence was low, so shooting from outside the box made sense, and it worked.”
