Arsenal's early breach tests defence but title hopes stay intact

Arsenal’s concession on Sunday underlines that their defensive strength remains the cornerstone of a Premier League title defence, keeping the Gunners on course for a second consecutive crown despite a second‑minute breach by Chelsea.

Rogers' early strike

Morgan Rogers' volley found the net inside the 'D' after a set‑piece scramble, beating Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya with the only sensible‑distance effort Chelsea produced inside the six‑yard box. The strike arrived in the second minute of the London derby, marking the first goal Arsenal have allowed this season after clean sheets against Coventry City and Aston Villa.

Rogers' finish was the result of a loose ball that the Gunners failed to clear, and the ball dropped to him at the edge of the penalty area. The goal highlighted the rarity of scoring against a keeper of Raya's calibre from a wider angle.

Defensive statistics reinforce title hopes

Despite the early setback, Arsenal limited Chelsea to an expected‑goals (xG) of 0.39, five shots on target and no big chances. Across the season the champions have conceded just 27 goals, the fewest in the Premier League, and have faced 89 shots on target, averaging fewer than three per game.

Pedro Neto created space on the right but struck the post, while another effort produced what was described as the match’s best save. Overall, the Gunners have kept opponents to low‑percentage attempts, a trend that has underpinned their title run.

Key figures in the back line include Ezri Konsa and Gabriel, who continue to anchor the centre, with William Saliba expected to return from injury later. Declan Rice’s off‑the‑ball work, alongside Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori, adds further stability as the full‑backs balance defensive duties with attacking support.

Arsenal’s ability to smother opponents, as highlighted by Mikel Arteta, offers a compelling cause for optimism at the Emirates Stadium. With the defence remaining the foundation, the team aims to preserve its low‑shot‑conceded record as the season progresses.

Looking ahead, Arsenal will seek to maintain this defensive rigidity, trusting Raya to tidy up any chances and hoping to secure their first back‑to‑back Premier League titles since the 1930s.
