Arsenal's airport nightmare clashes with The Independent's US focus

While Arsenal wrestle with a chaotic airport delay that forced the cancellation of their Champions League press conference in Naples, The Independent battles its own editorial turbulence, juggling coverage of US politics, Big Tech and a documentary on reproductive rights.

Travel chaos disrupts Arsenal's European launch

Arsenal’s press conference ahead of their Champions League opener away to Napoli was cancelled after the team’s flight was delayed by a technical failure in the United Kingdom’s air‑traffic control system. Manager Mikel Arteta had been due to speak to journalists in Naples on Tuesday evening, alongside defender Riccardo Calafiori, but the pre‑match media obligations were scrapped.

The squad stayed at the club’s training ground while the disruption unfolded, only departing for the airport once the issue was resolved. They were not expected to arrive in Naples until around 9.30 pm local time (8.30 pm BST).

This trip marks Arsenal’s return to European action for the first time since losing on penalties to Paris Saint‑Germain in last season’s Champions League final in Budapest.

Defender Jurrien Timber travelled with the party as he nears a comeback from injury. The 25‑year‑old Dutchman has not featured since coming on as a substitute in the loss to PSG, after undergoing groin surgery during the summer and missing the World Cup. Arteta said after a 2‑1 Premier League win over Chelsea that Timber is “in a really good place”.

Fellow defender Cristhian Mosquera remains a doubt for the Napoli clash, having suffered a muscle injury against Aston Villa that ruled him out of the Chelsea game. Apart from the sidelined William Saliba, Mosquera was the only first‑team player not to train on Tuesday.

Arsenal have begun their title defence with three successive wins, beating Coventry, Villa and Chelsea after a 3‑0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

Napoli’s campaign started with a 2‑0 win at Genoa but was followed by defeats to Como and Serie A champions Inter Milan, leaving them on a tougher start than the Gunners.

Scotland international midfielder Scott McTominay will miss the Arsenal match after undergoing a successful ablation procedure for a minor heart issue at Spire Manchester Hospital; he will rest for two weeks before returning to training.

Arsenal have also secured 16‑year‑old striker Mylo Bernard from Crystal Palace as part of their first‑year scholarship intake for the 2026‑27 season. Bernard scored more than 40 goals for Palace’s academy last term and will sign professional terms when he turns 17.

The Independent's broader editorial battle

Bookmark Comments Go to comments Bookmark popover Removed from bookmarks – The Independent says it is on the ground from reproductive rights to climate change to Tech, investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro‑Trump PAC and producing the documentary ‘The A Word’ about American women fighting for reproductive rights. At such a critical moment in US history, the outlet stresses the need for reporters on the ground, funded by donations from those who can afford it, and it keeps its journalism free of paywalls for the American audience.
