Arsenal’s £150m summer push: why the Gunners still chase Konsa

Arsenal have moved to sign England centre‑back Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for around £51 million, adding to a summer spend that already tops £100 million as the Gunners aim to defend their Premier League crown. The deal, announced after the club secured Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis earlier this window, underscores Mikel Arteta’s intent to bolster a backline hit by injuries.

Spending spree and new target

The Gunners have already spent more than £100 million this window, bringing in Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 million and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis for £34 million. Adding Konsa for roughly £51 million pushes Arsenal’s summer outlay beyond £150 million as they chase another Premier League title.

Even with seven senior defenders on the books, Arsenal still see a need for an established centre‑back; Arteta prefers not to rely on two left‑footed players in central defence, a scenario that could arise if Ben White were to miss time.

Injury worries drive the need

Defender William Saliba is ruled out for an extended period with a back issue that ended his World Cup with France early, while first‑choice right‑back Jurrien Timber will miss the opening weeks with a groin problem that forced him out of the Netherlands World Cup squad.

Ben White has struggled with fitness in recent seasons, leaving Cristhian Mosquera as the only right‑sided centre‑back to partner Gabriel Magalhaes, while Arteta’s left‑back preference falls to Riccardo Calafiori, with Piero Hincapie also left‑sided.

Highly rated 16‑year‑old academy defender Marli Salmon remains on the books but is expected to feature mainly in cup competitions as she continues her development.

Konsa’s credentials and Arsenal’s ambitions

Ezri Konsa, 28, lifted the Europa League with Aston Villa last season and started seven of England’s eight World Cup games, demonstrating his experience at the highest level.

Konsa’s Premier League numbers were outstanding: a 73.1% ground‑duel success rate, 95% passing accuracy – the best of any defender and the best of all players – and he led the league in duels of more than 20, while ranking fifth for ball carries over five metres. In the World Cup he recorded a 97% pass‑completion rate across his seven starts.

Supporters wonder whether Konsa will feature regularly once Saliba and Gabriel return, as Arteta’s preferred backline of Timber, Saliba, Gabriel and Calafiori appears difficult to displace on paper. The Gunners played 63 games across all competitions last season, winning the league and reaching the finals of the Champions League and Carabao Cup, yet injuries plagued the squad.

Arsenal spent £250 million last summer; Konsa’s arrival lifts this summer’s expenditure to over £150 million, bringing the squad’s total value to £1.19 billion world’s superclubs is the ambition, and the club is exploring stadium expansion and revenue growth while still monitoring forward targets such as Julian Alvarez and Juventus youngster Kenan Yildiz.
