Arsenal plot to sign young English‑born Nigerian defender from United

Premier League champions Arsenal are plotting to sign English‑born Nigerian defender Habeeb Ogunneye from Manchester United, 20‑year‑old London‑born centre‑back featured in 21 matches on loan at Newport County last season before being recalled in January, and has already appeared in several United first‑team squads.

Arsenal's pursuit and its implications

Arsenal’s move follows United’s recent poaching of two of the north London club’s brightest talents – defender Ayden Heaven and striker Chido Obi – who swapped the Emirates for Old Trafford. Adding a young defender addresses the gap left by those departures and bolsters the squad depth for a title‑defending side.

Ogunneye’s loan spell at Newport County gave him regular senior football, with 21 appearances that showcased his defensive reliability. His recall in January saw him integrated into United’s matchday squads, including the FA Cup semi‑final victory over Coventry City in 2024, indicating the club’s confidence in his development.

Eligible for both England and Nigeria, the defender has represented England at U17 level, making three appearances between 2021 and 2022. England U21 manager Lee Carsley has labelled him a “possible future star”, underscoring the Football Association’s intent to secure his senior allegiance.

For Arsenal, securing Ogunneye would add a versatile, young English‑born Nigerian option to a defence that has lost key players, while United risk losing a prospect they have already begun to involve in first‑team action. The transfer could also influence his final decision on international representation as both nations monitor his progress.
