Arsenal and Chelsea lead race for France defender Jules Kounde

Arsenal and Chelsea lead race for France defender Jules Kounde

Barcelona’s French centre‑back Jules Kounde, whose contract runs to June 2030 with four years still on the deal, has become the focus of England’s Premier League heavyweights Arsenal and Chelsea, 27‑year‑old finds himself on the bench at the Camp Nou.

Proven pedigree at Barcelona

Kounde arrived at Barcelona in 2022 after an outstanding three‑year spell with Spanish rivals Sevilla, where his performances caught the eye of the Catalan giants. In his debut season he helped the club win the La Liga title and has since added six more trophies, including two further La Liga crowns, bringing his total silverware haul at Barcelona to seven.

Since Hansi Flick took over, the France international has slipped down the pecking order, sitting behind Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart at right‑back. This term he has made three of his four league appearances from the bench and has recorded only one start in the Spanish top flight.

Premier League interest intensifies

Reports in Spain name Arsenal and Chelsea as the strongest contenders to secure Kounde’s signature, while Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on his situation. Arsenal first explored a move last summer, and all three clubs value his versatility as a full‑back and centre‑half.

There are no open negotiations or formal offers at present, and Barcelona are in no hurry to cash in on the former Sevilla and Bordeaux defender. With four years remaining on his contract, only a very high offer would tempt the La Liga champions to consider a January transfer.

Kounde has said he wants to feel important and remain a relevant part of Barcelona’s project, but he is prepared to explore other avenues if that does not materialise. The club have identified Sporting’s Ivan Fresneda and Tottenham’s Pedro Porro as possible right‑back replacements should he depart.

Speaking to French media, the 27‑year‑old insisted he feels physically fit and has no injury concerns. He accepted reduced playing time as a consequence of a below‑standard previous season, pledging to work hard to rediscover his best form and earn his place again.
