Around twenty million euros: Bergwijn's contract expires at Al‑Ittihad

Just over twenty million euros Al‑Ittihad paid a little more than two years ago to Ajax for Steven Bergwijn, and now his contract with the Saudi club expires at the end of the coming calendar year.

Contract background and national impact

Bergwijn, who has been playing in Saudi Arabia for some time, saw his place in the Dutch national team under Ronald Koeman disappear after the transfer was completed. Despite losing his international spot, he has kept himself professionally in good shape at Al‑Ittihad.

There have already been talks about a possible extension, but Bergwijn has not yet made a definitive decision about his future.

Potential new destinations

According to FootballTransfers, three clubs are suitable for a new move: OGC Nice in France, Deportivo Alavés in Spain and Crystal Palace in England. Nice offers plenty of playing time and a system that suits a left winger well, while the club just avoided relegation to Ligue 2 last season.

Bergwijn seeks European return while Al‑Ittihad struggles

At Crystal Palace, Bergwijn could play alongside compatriot Quinten Timber, who recently moved from Olympique Marseille to the London club; however, the English club offers slightly less perspective, although they are playing European football this season.

The Spanish club Deportivo Alavés forms the third option, but there are no further details about the possible role of the forward at that club.

Bergwijn began his professional career at PSV, where he played for about eight and a half years before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2020. After two and a half years in London, he returned to the Netherlands, where Ajax at the time paid just over 31 million euros – then the club's most expensive purchase record.

After two seasons in Amsterdam his spell at Ajax ended, leading to the current situation in Saudi Arabia, where he is now approaching a possible departure date.
