Antonio signs for Watford after leg break in car crash

On the wet turf of Vicarage Road stands Michail Antonio, still with a cast on his leg, as he signs the contract. The 36‑year‑old striker, who after a broken leg in a car accident in June 2025 underwent a long rehabilitation, is starting his new career at the Championship club Watford.

One‑year contract and new club

As Watford officially announces, Antonio has signed a one‑year contract. The move was made on a free transfer, allowing the former West Ham United striker to immediately join the squad of the Championship club. The contract runs for one year and provides the 36‑year‑old striker with security for the upcoming season.

Antonio will do his part for the team and hopes to strengthen the squad with his experience. After receiving international clearance, he could already be in the Sky Bet Championship lineup on Saturday against Stoke City. He has been training intensively with the Watford players in recent weeks.

Background, injury and previous clubs

The 36‑year‑old striker suffered a broken leg in a car accident in 2025, which abruptly ended his spell at West Ham United. His last appearance for the Hammers was in December 2024, before he, after his recovery, played four matches for Al Sailiya in Qatar. A planned move to Brentford fell through because he suffered a calf muscle fibre tear shortly before signing.

Antonio said after signing that Watford is a big club for him. He wants to do his part to help the team and achieve success together. “Watford is a big club and I hope I can bring success here,” he said, while awaiting international clearance.
