Valencia have appointed former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre as their new LaLiga head coach, signing a contract until the end of the season with an option for a further year, after sacking Carlos Corberan earlier this month following four straight defeats.

Management felt an experienced hand was required to stabilise a side that had struggled since the dismissal of Carlos Corberan. The appointment aims to halt the slide and inject fresh tactical ideas.

The 67‑year‑old signed a deal that runs to the season’s end and includes the option of a further year, marking his seventh spell in Spain after previous appointments at Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca. His return to Spain follows stepping down as Mexico boss at the end of the World Cup.
During his three‑year tenure with Mexico, Aguirre guided the side to three World Cups, won two CONCACAF Gold Cups and saw the team exit in the last 16 to England. The LaLiga appointment was confirmed in a Getty‑released statement.

Fans will recall a viral touchline exchange at the Estadio Azteca when Aguirre shouted Anthony Gordon’s name before quipping “F*** you”, then laughed hysterically. Gordon later said he took the comment as a bit of a compliment, cementing a memorable moment between the England winger and the former Mexico manager.
Gordon, who joined Barcelona for £70million this summer, recorded an assist for Fermin Lopez in a 5‑0 defeat at the Mestalla, one of five assists in seven appearances across all competitions. He will have to wait until 31 January to face Aguirre, as Valencia were beaten by Barcelona earlier this month.
Aguirre will begin his tenure after the international break, with Valencia’s next fixture away to newly‑promoted Racing Santander on 11 October. The club hopes the experienced manager can steer them away from the relegation zone and restore confidence among the squad.
