Another international missing: BVB hit with double blow
Borussia Dortmund already has to cope with a double blow during the current international break: defender Nico Schlotterbeck is out after a recurring foot injury, and at the same time concerns are growing about right‑back Julian Ryerson, who does not appear to be at 100 % after two quick substitutions with the Norwegian national team.
Schlotterbeck has to sit out due to foot injury
The 24‑year‑old centre‑back Nico Schlotterbeck has suffered another foot injury, which, according to medical assessment, means he will miss the upcoming international break. This means Borussia Dortmund lose not only a key player but also a regular international who is slated for the German national team. The situation is illustrated by Nick Potts.
Julian Ryerson, the right‑back of the Norwegian national team, had to be substituted at halftime in the 1‑2 loss to Portugal last Sunday. The injury was apparently severe enough that he could not continue on the pitch. This was the first time he had to leave the field in quick succession during international matches.
Ryerson's double substitutions worry BVB
Only four days later, Norway's coach Stale Solbakken started Ryerson in the lineup for the match against Wales, which was also lost 1‑2. After about a quarter of an hour he had to leave the pitch again due to a complaint. The quick return and the second departure raise questions about his fitness.
No official diagnosis has been released yet, leaving it unclear what problem is troubling the BVB star. Since Ryerson was substituted twice within four days, observers doubt whether he will be fit for the upcoming home game against Werder Bremen on Friday, 9 October. That would be a major loss for Borussia Dortmund's defence.
Norway must face Portugal again on Sunday, 4 October. From Dortmund's perspective, the team hopes Ryerson will be spared this time to avoid further strain. Another avoidance would be irresponsible for both the player and Borussia Dortmund.
With Yan Couto's departure in the summer, Ryerson is currently the only natural right‑back in the BVB squad. If he is unavailable, Daniel Svensson would have to take over the position, Maxi Beier could step in as a wing‑back, or in an emergency Ethan Nwaneri could be deployed on the right side. The thin cover highlights the pressure on the coaching staff.
