Anger at Man United after VAR error in derby: “I’m done with VAR”

Anger erupted at Manchester United after a decisive VAR error in the derby against Manchester City. In the sixtieth minute, the VAR allowed a goal by Erling Haaland, despite Enzo Fernandez not touching the ball. The refereeing organization Pro Ref later confirmed the mistake.

Screenshots of the moment in question were published with video, clearly showing how the flag was initially raised and then the VAR intervened. The incident received wide attention in the sports media. The refereeing organization later admitted that the VAR did not recognise the impact of Haaland’s position. At United, anger immediately arose, with players and staff condemning the decision.

Reactions from former players and analysts

Lisandro Martinez, former Ajax player, stated: “The Premier League is the best competition in the world, and now we have to go home with this injustice.” Michael Carrick, coach of Manchester United, called the decision ‘worrying’ and “it could not be clearer”. Gary Neville, analyst, said: “There is no doubt for me; they simply ignore the rules.”

Wayne Rooney also expressed his disbelief: “I am completely fed up with the VAR. It has taken all the emotion out of the game.” Former goalkeeper Joe Hart also emphasised that “anyone who understands football knows that Fernández had an influence on the situation.” The frustration spread among United’s staff, who labelled the decision unacceptable.

At Manchester City there was more understanding. Coach Enzo Maresca stated: “Enzo had no influence on the situation.” Haaland himself responded lightly: “I looked at Enzo and the referee, they raised their thumb. Then I knew the goal would count.”

City remained unbeaten with a 0‑1 victory and collected twelve points from four matches, while United only secured four points. The statement was later also shared with the US media.
