Angel Gomes warned to choose next club wisely after turbulent moves
Angel Gomes, the 26‑year‑old England midfielder, has been told that another ill‑judged transfer could jeopardise the trajectory of his career. After rising through the academy at Carrington and making ten appearances for Manchester United, his recent spells at Lille, Marseille and Wolves have left his future in limbo.
From promising academy graduate to unsettled professional
Gomes left the Red Devils in 2020 and thrived at Lille, helping the French side qualify for the Champions League and earning his first senior England caps under interim boss Lee Carsley. Despite that success, he has not been called up since his four caps in 2024.
He moved to Marseille under Roberto De Zerbi, but a chaotic period at the club limited his starts. In January, he returned to the Premier League with Wolves, making twelve appearances for a side already facing relegation.
Expert warning and the market reality
European football analyst Andy Brassell, speaking to AFP, said Gomes must be “remarkably careful about his next career move because he’s not a kid anymore”. Brassell warned that while one bad choice can be survived, three could cause his market value to plummet.
Brassell noted that when Gomes’ contract at Lille ran out, he expected more Premier League interest, yet “Premier League clubs are tripping over themselves to take a free Ligue 1 midfielder”. He added that assumptions about Gomes being a physical beast may have clouded judgments.
Gomes’ return to Marseille has seen him score once and provide an assist in five appearances, including a goal against Paris Saint‑Germain. Yet Brassell believes his recent moves have not put him in the best light, describing the Marseille stint as “victim of chaos”.
With Wolves relegated last season, the option to make his Premier League stay permanent vanished, leaving his long‑term future uncertain. Brassell suggested a “hard reset” might be needed, but cautioned against leaving Marseille merely to escape – the next step must suit both player and club.
