Andoni Iraola hints Liverpool may keep Uruguayan Ronald Araujo
Under the floodlights at Anfield, Andoni Iraola watched his loanee patrol the right flank, his pace and composure drawing appreciative nods from the Liverpool crowd. The manager’s smile hinted at more than a good performance – a possible long‑term stay for the Uruguayan defender.
From centre‑back to right‑back
Ronald Araujo has been described as a revelation since his arrival in Merseyside, quickly establishing himself in the squad. Although initially signed as a central defender, he has already built a compelling case to become Liverpool’s first‑choice right‑back, at least until Conor Bradley regains full fitness.
Barcelona roots and a fresh start
The 27‑year‑old arrived from Barcelona, where he had captained the side, joining the Reds on loan in search of a new beginning. His performances suggest he may have found a permanent home in Liverpool’s defence.
Liverpool hold an option to buy Araujo in their agreement with Barca, yet the club has not confirmed whether the clause will be triggered. Iraola’s recent comments, however, have dropped a clear hint that the Uruguayan could remain at Anfield beyond the loan spell.
"Sometimes you talk to a player and you can feel straight away that everything was positive," Iraola said, underscoring the good relationship he enjoys with the loanee.
He added, "I like his spirit. Now I'm pushing him to learn a little bit the language because a good way for us to use his experience is if he could communicate better with the teammates and use all the experience that he has, but I suppose it will take some time."
The manager’s emphasis on language learning signals that Araujo is not merely a short‑term fix. With many fixtures remaining this season, Liverpool have ample opportunity to decide on a permanent move, and early signs point to Iraola’s desire to keep him.
Iraola blocks Mamadiashvili’s bid, Alisson stays No 1 for Liverpool
If the Uruguayan continues to perform at this level, it will be hard to find a Liverpool supporter opposed to securing his services beyond the end of the campaign.
