Anderlecht turn to Omobamidele to shore up defence for Europa League
Republic of Ireland defender Andrew Omobamidele has joined Belgian side Anderlecht on a season‑long loan from Strasbourg, a move confirmed. The 24‑year‑old, who captained Strasbourg in their 2‑1 win over Lens on 29 August, will add depth to a defence gearing up for the Europa League campaign.
Why Anderlecht need defensive reinforcement
Anderlecht are competing in the Europa League after a comfortable 6‑0 aggregate victory over Kairat in the play‑offs. They finished fourth in the Belgian Pro League last season, 24 points behind champions Club Brugge. The move gives Omobamidele the chance to play European football with Anderlecht.
Ireland teammate Josh Cullen, now of Burnley, spent two seasons with Anderlecht between 2020 and 2022. His previous spell highlights the club’s history of recruiting Irish talent.
Omobamidele's record and loan terms
The loan runs until the end of the season and contains no purchase option. The transfer was described as a surprise by both clubs. Omobamidele made 54 appearances for Strasbourg after joining from Nottingham Forest in January 2025, scoring one goal. That tally includes 12 games in Strasbourg’s run to the Conference League semi‑finals last season.
Earlier in his career he featured 55 times for Norwich, finding the net twice. He then moved to Nottingham Forest, where he managed just 15 appearances. His limited 15 appearances at Forest underscored the need for regular minutes. In the 2024/2025 season he played 41 games for Strasbourg but was not a regular under Hugo Oliveira.
Omobamidele came through Norwich’s academy and made his senior debut in the 2020/2021 season. He left Norwich in the summer of 2023 to join Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Anderlecht have also added Moldovan international defender Oleg Reabcuik and central midfielder Romeo Amane in the final days of the transfer window. Reabcuik arrives as a Moldovan international defender.
Omobamidele will need to compete for a starting berth as Anderlecht prepare for their Europa League fixtures. With no option to buy, his future will be decided after the loan ends, depending on his performances and the club’s defensive needs. The weekend also sees St Patrick's Athletic host Bohemians in an FAI Cup quarter‑final.
