Anderlecht sets a trap for the Gones' defence in the Europa League
Olympique Lyonnais travel to Anderlecht this Wednesday at 21:00 for the Europa League match. The Gones, under the guidance of Paulo Fonseca, will have to counter a Belgian side that dominates possession and multiplies crosses, while exploiting the spaces of a high block.
Possession and pressing statistics
According to DataScout, the Mauves show a possession index of 90 and a pressing resistance index of 94. In comparison, OL is clearly below on these criteria. This Belgian superiority forces the Lyon side to find solutions to break the ball control.
The number of crosses from Anderlecht reaches 98, compared with only 44 for the Gones. Long balls, however, remain marginal for the Brussels side, with an index of 17, while Lyon records 67, highlighting a clear stylistic difference.
The trap identified by Paulo Fonseca
Fonseca identified a weakness: Anderlecht presses high with an index of 80, but leaves a considerable space behind a low defence rated at 13 and a discipline of 8. This imbalance gives the Lyon side the opportunity to attack quickly in depth.
The Gones dominate verticality (81 versus 58) and have an advantage in intensity and endurance, rated at 92 versus 69 and 78 for the Mauves. By exploiting these assets, Lyon can counter the Belgian risk‑taking and aim for the back of the defence.

Anderlecht's summer rebuild
Promoted to the Belgian elite under the direction of Antoine Sibierski, the club recorded thirty moves, including ten arrivals of various nationalities. About €27 million were invested and €65 million recovered, generating a positive balance of €38 million according to Transfermarkt.
Despite this overhaul, the Brussels side qualified for the Europa League group stage thanks to two 3‑0 wins over FK Kairat. Biancone and Maamar are among the highest‑rated players, ahead of Pétrot. The match will be broadcast on Canal+ Foot, refereed by the Spaniard De Burgos Bengoetxea.
The Lyon side will have to stay vigilant and not be lulled by the Mauves' possession, in order to realise their European ambition.
