Anderlecht banks on Aasgaard but Rangers foresee a return to the Championship
Anderlecht welcomed this summer the Norwegian attacking midfielder Thelo Aasgaard, loaned by Rangers until the end of the season with a purchase option negotiated by the Mauves and the Whites. The Belgian club is closely monitoring his performances in Brussels, while the Scots want to maximise the player's visibility.
Loan conditions and Rangers' expectations
The Norwegian, 24 years old, was transferred by Rangers, who had spent three point five million pounds to acquire him in 2025. Keith Wyness, former Aberdeen CEO and club advisor, reminds that Rangers will not wait indefinitely and want to recoup the value of their investment.
Possibility of a return to the Championship
If Aasgaard does not establish himself at Anderlecht and the purchase option is not exercised, he could be sent back to England. Wyness told Football Insider that Rangers will “probably try to place him in a Championship club”, judging that the English second division would provide a better showcase for the player.
Aasgaard already knows this level: before joining Rangers, he spent half a season in the Championship with Luton Town, where he made 17 appearances and scored two goals.
In Scotland, he recorded seven goals and four assists in the league last season, showing his offensive potential.
For Anderlecht, the situation is not trivial. The club holds a purchase option but first wants to verify that the midfielder can truly add value in Brussels.
Rangers, for their part, insist that the Norwegian regains visibility. They do not want to let him “wither on the bench for an entire season” and are considering, if necessary, a new loan in England.
Wyness concluded that “the Championship could provide a better showcase for Aasgaard”, highlighting the importance of a clear plan for each player to develop their careers and sell them optimally.
