Amit Bhatia’s Anfield debut follows £1.65bn buy‑in with Jeff Bezos

Amit Bhatia, the new Vice Chairman of Liverpool Football Club, stepped into the Anfield stands on Saturday, his first appearance since heading a consortium that bought a £1.65 billion minority stake alongside Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co‑founder Eduardo Saverin.

The report was filed by OLLIE LEWIS, DEPUTY SPORTS EDITOR, on 29 August 2026. He noted the significance of the new ownership structure for the club.

The deal was completed this month by Bhatia’s 1892 Holdings, which acquired the minority share in Liverpool together with Bezos and Saverin, bringing the total purchase price to £1.65 billion. The consortium’s involvement marks the latest chapter in the club’s evolving ownership structure.

Following the transaction, Bhatia was appointed Vice Chairman of the club and was spotted in the stands wearing a Liverpool tie, a visual cue of his new status. His presence was noted by fans and media alike, signalling his commitment to the club’s future.

Managerial debut under Iraola

On the same Saturday, Andoni Iraola prepared for his first competitive match at Anfield. He had overseen a dramatic 2‑2 draw with Newcastle at St James' Park last weekend, and now the Reds face Nottingham Forest seeking their first win under his tenure.

Co‑owner’s reflections

Bhatia told club media on Friday, ‘It feels incredible… an incredibly proud moment for myself, for my family, for our partners.’ The comment came after he toured the stadium with his family, absorbing the atmosphere of the historic ground.

He added, ‘Talking about Liverpool Football Club, the greatest club in the world, is a huge privilege and honour; I have always admired its history, culture and supporters.’ He said the club’s global fanbase and its storied achievements have always inspired him.

Bhatia stressed that the investment remains subject to regulatory approval and that FSG stays the controlling owner, while he and his partners are ready to add value whenever asked, hoping for a long‑term partnership. He also highlighted that the partnership is designed to complement FSG’s strategic vision rather than challenge it.
