Als Neuers Transfer fuels fan fury at Bayern

Manuel Neuer left FC Schalke 04 for FC Bayern in the spring of 2011, signing a five‑year contract after the German record‑breaking fee of €30 million was agreed. The 25‑year‑old goalkeeper became the most expensive German keeper ever, and the transfer instantly provoked intense fan anger on both sides of the rivalry.

Why Bayern pursued the German international

FC Bayern identified Neuer as the world’s best goalkeeper and were willing to break the domestic transfer record to secure his services. The club’s analysis highlighted his market value of €4.00 million at the time, yet they paid a premium to ensure the national team’s first‑choice keeper would join the record‑champions.

President Hoeneß’s reaction to the fan backlash

President Uli Hoeneß described the hostile treatment of Neuer by some supporters as “catastrophic”. In a televised interview he said, “It was terrible, and I even apologised to Manuel after the match. It was only a small part of our fans, but their behaviour was unacceptable.” He added that the club would not let fan sentiment influence future signings.

Supporters’ protests and media coverage

Thousands of “Koan‑Neuer” placards and relentless whistles greeted the Bayern‑Schalke cup semi‑final on 2 March 2011, signalling the depth of the community’s anger. The Süddeutsche Zeitung noted the unique quality of the episode, writing that Bayern were being “harassed for a player who was not yet present”. The same posters re‑appeared on 30 April during the Bundesliga clash between the two sides.

Hoeneß also condemned the “bodiless disrespect” shown by a segment of the fan base, insisting that Bayern would continue to decide signings solely on sporting criteria. He warned that treating a guest so poorly was “not Bayern Munich, not my Bayern Munich”.

Neuer himself took the criticism in stride, who said the goalkeeper found the situation “much worse in Dortmund” but remained unfazed. The transfer, now part of the club’s historic “Neueste Transfers” archive, continues to be discussed in Bundesliga forums and premium service video analyses.
