Alonso's Europe ambition puts Fernandez's future in focus
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the Spaniard, addressed the media for the first time on Monday at Stamford Bridge, outlining his bold vision for the Blues and stressing the importance of retaining Enzo Fernandez. He said the club must become competitive, win games and aim for Europe next season, while enjoying the process.
When asked about the distinction between a manager and a head coach, Alonso replied, “It means that I'm working together with the sporting directors to make the right decisions on a daily basis.” He added that the staff are aligned, have set priorities and know what they want to do.
Alonso called the Premier League the most competitive league in the world right now and said he feels honoured, privileged and ready for the challenge. He reiterated that Chelsea must rise to that level to succeed and that reaching Europe next season is a core objective.
He noted that “Time will tell” whether the club can achieve its Europe target, but cautioned against making predictions for May as it is still too early.

The Spaniard emphasized that players need hunger, passion and attention to detail, stating that the squad is already showing good energy just four days into pre‑season preparations. He believes that a clear playing style and approach to each game are essential. Alonso praised Cole Palmer as a special talent, describing the England international as arriving in a good mood after missing out on the World Cup squad and ready for a great season. He expects Palmer to be a key figure in Chelsea’s attack. He also acknowledged interest in 22‑year‑old Alejandro Garnacho from another club, hoping the situation ends positively for all parties. Nicolas Jackson will join the pre‑season tour in Australia and Asia after his season‑long loan at Bayern Munich, and Alonso reiterated his wish for Enzo Fernandez to remain at Chelsea beyond the summer, noting they have spoken privately.
