Alonso’s defensive woes clash with Hull’s unbeaten surge
Chelsea were held to a 2‑2 draw by promoted Hull City on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, a disappointing turn after a recent loss to Arsenal. The result highlights the early challenges for Xabi Alonso’s side as the Blues struggle to convert their attacking flair into victories.
Hull’s unbeaten defence
Hull City, known as the Tigers, entered the match unbeaten and had not conceded a Premier League goal prior to travelling south to Stamford Bridge. Their solid defence had been a cornerstone of their early season form.
For Chelsea, scoring twice at home yet failing to win is a rarity, underscoring the disappointment of the draw. The Blues have invested heavily in attacking talent, making the lack of points particularly unsettling.
Only Brighton & Hove Albion have outscored Chelsea in the opening four league games, netting 13 goals to the Blues’ ten. Brighton’s tally was boosted by goals against Aston Villa and Coventry City, teams that struggled defensively.
Chelsea’s defensive concerns
Chelsea sit fifth in the Premier League but possess the worst goal difference and the highest number of goals conceded among the top eight. Only three clubs have allowed more goals than the Blues at this stage.
Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has been required to make ten saves in four matches, a figure just one higher than Chelsea’s total concessions. Crystal Palace also concede regularly, a concern shared by Pierre Sage and Alonso, while Ipswich Town, sitting ninth, have likewise let in ten goals.
Chelsea have conceded at least twice in each of their four league outings, even in their two victories. They needed three goals to beat Fulham and four to overcome Brighton, indicating a reliance on prolific scoring to offset defensive lapses.
Hull’s two goals arrived within seven minutes against a defence valued at £140 million, composed entirely of players who featured for Chelsea last season and guarded by the self‑proclaimed world’s best goalkeeper. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez can be patchy, while new signing Maxence Lacroix was not on the pitch when Hull struck.
Alonso has signalled that defensive tightening will be a priority, expecting the short trip to Brentford to catalyse the process. Improving at the back will be essential for the Blues to translate their attacking firepower into consistent Premier League success.
