Alonso questions Enzo Fernández’s future while hailing Barco’s debut

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso addressed the club’s two Argentine prospects in a press conference, questioning the future of midfielder Enzo Fernández while praising the debut of fellow Argentine Valentín Barco, who started for the Blues in his first Premier League appearance at Stamford Bridge.

“We evaluate individually and together what is best for the team tonight, what is best for the other players who were playing,” Alonso said. He added that the exclusion was a decision made by both him and the club, not a result of the City talks.

When asked whether Fernández had been left out because of the City negotiations, Alonso responded: “No, it was only for today’s match. We have other players who need minutes.” He emphasized that the choice was taken with the upcoming Sunday game in mind.

Barco's debut impact

Valentín Barco made his first start for Chelsea in the EFL Cup win over Luton Town at Stamford Bridge. Despite being jeered by the visiting fans, he delivered an impressive performance. Official statistics show Barco recorded 116 touches, completed 97 of 104 passes, made seven recoveries and won three of four ground duels.

Alonso described Barco’s display as “impressive”, noting his dynamism, tactical intelligence and ability to adapt to the English game. He said the youngster showed personality and game understanding that the club values highly during this transition period.

Chelsea’s broader transfer activity

Chelsea also announced the signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Dibu Martínez from Aston Villa for £7.5 million. Alonso replied that the club is happy with its current squad but remains vigilant and ready to make decisions during the transfer window.
