Alonso lauds Emegha as Camara deal falls, Chelsea left uncertain
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised the arrival of Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha while confirming the club’s disappointment after the £47 million Lamine Camara transfer from AS Monaco collapsed in September 2025, a contrast that underlines the Blues’ divergent summer fortunes.
Chelsea announced on 12 September 2025 that they had secured Emmanuel Emegha through a deal with sister club RC Strasbourg. The 23‑year‑old Netherlands international officially joined the Blues in the summer of 2026, adding a new attacking option to the squad.
Alonso has repeatedly highlighted Emegha’s attributes, describing him as a ‘big threat’ who thrives on the last line of defence. He noted the striker missed part of pre‑season through injury but stressed his youth and special qualities, urging patience as he earns his place.
Emegha’s path to the first team
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on 27 July that Chelsea have no intention of selling Emegha despite signing Danny Welbeck. Sources said the club told the striker he must earn his spot in Alonso’s squad, reinforcing the manager’s confidence.
In contrast, the club’s pursuit of Lamine Camara from AS Monaco collapsed at the final deadline. A £47 million agreement had been in place and the midfielder completed his medical, ready to join on the last day of the summer window.
Camara’s deal that fell through
Monaco withdrew from the deal late on, leaving Chelsea without the midfielder. When asked about the missed signing, Alonso said he was prepared, happy with the squad’s depth and the healthy competition across positions.
He added that a balance of mature and young players creates energy during the week and helps the team perform on weekends. After just two games, Alonso believes the certainty of who will build the squad is a positive sign.
The divergent outcomes – Emegha’s retained future versus Camara’s aborted transfer – illustrate Chelsea’s focus on developing talent while accepting the occasional miss in the market, setting the tone for the rest of the season.
