Alloa’s shootout win dashes Falkirk’s Cup ambitions, McGlynn warns
John McGlynn’s Falkirk were held to a 1‑1 draw by lower‑league Alloa on Saturday, after the visitors clinched the bonus point by winning the subsequent penalty shootout, a result that effectively ended the Premiership club’s hopes of progressing in the League Cup.
Alloa secured the extra point by prevailing in the penalty shootout, further widening the gap between the two sides. The shootout victory underscored the lower‑league hosts’ resilience after the draw.
Going into the group stage match, Falkirk needed three points to keep any chance of qualifying for the next round of the League Cup. McGlynn had stressed that a win was essential for the Premiership side to stay in contention.
The 1‑1 draw effectively ended Falkirk’s hopes of progression, as the bonus point loss meant the group could no longer be won. With the bonus point gone, winning the group is now beyond the Premiership side.
Even a victory in their final group game against Stranraer on Saturday is unlikely to be enough to secure a best runners‑up spot. A win would be required to keep any slim chance of a best runners‑up place.
McGlynn admitted the club is in a period of transition, describing it as the biggest turnover in players the team has experienced. He criticised the performance, saying the team was not clinical in front of goal. He added the quality of balls into the box was not convincing.
McGlynn called for more hunger and bravery, urging his players to put their heads on the ball. He thanked the good turnout of fans, apologised for the disappointing display and pledged that the group will stick together and work through the disappointment. The result left the Premiership club scrambling for points in the league.
