Allegri suffers five Champions League defeats, Villarreal to Napoli

Massimiliano Allegri, Napoli's coach, is experiencing a negative spell in the top European competition, with five consecutive defeats in the Champions League. The most recent loss came against Villarreal, where Napoli lost 3-1 after a comeback, confirming the negative trend.

History of successes now far away

In the past the Champions League rewarded Allegri, who led Juventus to two finals: a 3-1 loss to Barcelona in 2015 and another 4-1 loss to Real Madrid in 2017. After about ten years, the situation has changed dramatically.

The coach's previous defeats

The five consecutive defeats include the 0-1 loss to Arsenal this season, as well as three failures with Juventus against Paris Saint‑Germain (2-1), Benfica (4-3) and Maccabi Haifa (2-0) in 2022.

A single win in ten matches

Meanwhile, Allegri's only win in the last ten Champions League matches was the 3-1 victory over Villarreal, achieved in the same competition. Previously, Juventus had suffered defeats to Benfica (2-1), Paris Saint‑Germain (2-1) and Villarreal (3-0), with a 1-1 draw against the Spaniards in the second leg of the round of 16.

Upcoming crucial commitments

Napoli must now make amends in the upcoming home match against Bodo/Glimt, the Norwegian side that eliminated Inter in the playoffs of the previous edition of the Champions League. Before that, the club faces an away league fixture at Venezia, last in the table with zero points, after a recent coaching change.

Allegri's warning

Allegri issued a clear warning to his players: "If we don't play with humility, we risk coming out with broken bones".
