Allegri puts De Bruyne deeper in midfield to extend his career
Massimiliano Allegri is convinced that Kevin De Bruyne can last longer if he plays a little deeper in midfield. On Saturday the Belgian became the match‑winner against Frosinone from that position, after which he scored twice in the 3‑0 victory for Napoli.
New position in the 3‑4‑3 system
Allegri placed De Bruyne alongside Stanislav Lobotka as one of the two central midfielders in Napoli’s 3‑4‑3 formation. The Belgian, however, prefers a position a little further forward, but the coach said that the lower role can extend his playing time.
In the match De Bruyne scored from the penalty spot and thus contributed to the win. Noa Lang provided the other goal, causing the two forwards to steal the show in Naples.
Afterwards Allegri praised De Bruyne, saying: “He is extraordinary.” The Italian coach added: “He played in a position he does not like to occupy, he prefers to have fun in attack, but here he is better. Although he thinks otherwise about it.”
Allegri also emphasized the Belgian’s age; De Bruyne will be 36 next year. “I told him that in the position I have placed him, his career can be extended for a few more years,” Allegri explained.
De Bruyne completed the full ninety minutes for Napoli for the second consecutive weekend, which the coach sees as a sign of confidence.
