Allan Elias' solo strike ignites Manchester City’s League Cup surge
Allan Elias, the 22‑year‑old Brazilian, marked his Manchester City debut with a solo goal as Enzo Maresca’s side thumped Norwich City 5‑0 in the League Cup on 17 September 2026 at the Etihad Stadium.
First‑half onslaught
City opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Floyd Samba headed in after a loose ball, and three minutes later Rayan Cherki doubled the lead with a low drive. Maresca had rotated his squad, giving academy prospects and summer arrivals valuable minutes, and the visitors struggled to contain the relentless pressure.
Elias’ solo masterpiece
After receiving the ball on the left wing, Allan cut inside onto his right foot, weaved past several Norwich defenders with rapid touches, then switched to his left foot to unleash a powerful finish into the net in the 48th minute. The goal showcased the pace, close control and one‑on‑one skill that justified his €40 million summer signing from Palmeiras.
City’s cup momentum
In the second half Samba struck again in the 54th minute, and Ryan McAidoo added the final tally in the 90th minute, completing a dominant display. Allan also provided the assist for Samba’s second goal, linking up with the 17‑year‑old midfielder to further cement his impact.
Fans erupted in applause as Allan left the field, replaced by 18‑year‑old Kaden Braithwaite. The crowd’s reaction highlighted the excitement surrounding the newcomer after his decisive contribution.
Allan’s arrival marked the third‑biggest sale in Palmeiras’ history, bringing €40 million (approximately R$ 240 million) to the Brazilian club. He joins a select group of Brazilians who have scored or assisted on their City debut, alongside Geovanni, Elano and Robinho, while other compatriots such as Jô, Fernandinho, Gabriel Jesus, Danilo, Sávio and Vitor Reis have debuted without finding the net.
With the win, Manchester City progressed to the round of 16 of the League Cup and will meet Brighton on 28 October at the Etihad. The victory underlines Maresca’s confidence in his young squad and sets the stage for another cup challenge.
