Alexia Putellas reinvents herself in London and eyes the Ballon d'Or

Alexia Putellas wanted to see if she could reinvent herself; after fourteen years of glory at Barça, where she won titles, she arrived in London for a fresh start, debuted with the London City Lionesses in a win over Manchester United, with a sold‑out stadium and three points, and is already on the Ballon d'Or shortlist.

A victorious debut against Manchester United

The stadium was full and the atmosphere was electrifying. Alexia said: “It was important to start with a win. We knew it was sold out, that everything was sold, and starting with three points has been incredible.”

Goals and adaptation in the British capital

In an exclusive interview for, journalist Kin Cheung, accompanied by Begoña Villarrubia, described Alexia as a relaxed and happy journalist, albeit with the nerves that come with a new beginning. The player explained that adapting to London is “super interesting” and that she enjoys discovering the city.

Alexia highlighted that she loves the numerous parks in each neighbourhood and live‑music concerts, activities that allow her to unwind after training. She noted that, although the last few days have started to look grey, the rain has not been an obstacle to her routine.

The support of her teammates Mapi, Lucía Corrales, María Pérez and Jana has been essential. “When we speak in our language we feel more at home,” she said, pointing out that the players who arrived last year facilitate integration.

Putellas confirmed that she is on the Ballon d'Or shortlist and that, if she doesn’t win it, she hopes a former Barça teammate will. “It is a trophy of great prestige and it is an honour to be among the candidates,” she said with excitement.

The footballer also stressed the importance of making the team visible so that more girls see themselves reflected and get inspired. She mentioned that she has seen her name on magazine covers at the airport, which she considers a positive step for the growth of women’s football.

Thus, the combination of a career full of titles at Barça and the challenge of reinventing herself in London shows that Alexia Putellas continues to seek new horizons, while keeping her eyes on the Ballon d'Or and the future of the women’s game.
