Alexander-Arnold to stay at Real Madrid, reports say

Alexander-Arnold to stay at Real Madrid, reports say

Trent Alexander‑Arnold has confirmed he will remain at Real Madrid for the rest of the season, reports say, despite intense speculation that he might re‑join Liverpool in January. The decision comes as the English right‑back faces limited playing time and a £10m fee paid by Los Blancos to facilitate an early exit from Anfield.

Liverpool's pursuit of the right‑back

Liverpool have been linked with re‑signing Alexander‑Arnold, and the club was left helpless when the defender chose to run down his contract at Anfield to engineer a move to the La Liga giants in the summer of 2025. The Reds ultimately received £10m from Los Blancos, allowing the player to leave early and represent Real at the Club World Cup.

Since his arrival at the Bernabeu, Alexander‑Arnold has struggled with injury and has found it difficult to impress, especially after Real signed Denzel Dumfries to compete for the right‑back spot. Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde has also been preferred in that position, further limiting his opportunities.

Alexander‑Arnold's stance on a January move

TEAMtalk reported last week that the Englishman is ‘considering his future at Real Madrid’ after growing frustrated by his lack of playing time. Liverpool remain among a host of clubs monitoring his situation, but no concrete offer has materialised.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague told that Alexander‑Arnold has no intention of joining Liverpool or any other club in January. “No, not in January. What he’s feeling right now is ‘Okay, it’s not my time, but it will be my time, I will prepare for my time’,” Balague said, adding that Valverde and Dumfries are ahead of him and that he is effectively third choice.

Balague also noted that Mourinho has urged the right‑back to keep fighting, and that the player has been unfairly deployed in midfield when starting, despite being a defender by trade.

Real Madrid journalist Ben Fernandes Santos wrote on X that Liverpool currently have no interest in bringing Alexander‑Arnold back to Anfield. Santos quoted sources saying Valverde is deemed better at right‑back and that the Englishman's benchings are purely technical decisions.
