Albiol leaves Pisa at 41 and enrolls at Coverciano
Raul Albiol, Spanish defender aged 41, has finished his sole season with Pisa, where he played eight matches in Serie A before deciding to undertake coaching courses at Coverciano. The midfielder closed his spell with an assist and no goals, marking the end of a career that exceeded 800 appearances.
End of contract and new path
A year ago Albiol signed a one‑year contract with Pisa, with an option for the following season that was not exercised after the relegation to Serie B. In eight appearances he recorded zero goals and one assist, figures that probably influenced his decision to enrol in the Coverciano courses to become a coach.
In his latest Instagram post the defender described the season as difficult, thanking Pisa, his teammates and the fans for the treatment he received. He concluded the message with a heartfelt thank you for everything.
International milestones and club successes
Throughout his career Albiol has surpassed 800 matches, winning the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup wearing the Spain shirt. These international triumphs represent the brightest part of his journey.

With clubs he collected a Spanish league title, a Super Cup and two King’s Cups, while in Italy he added an Italian Cup and an Italian Super Cup won with Napoli, where he played for six seasons.
In the Europa League he delivered solid performances with Valencia and Villarreal, taking part in two editions of the competition.
Not all over‑40 players can compete in Serie A, but Albiol has shown that experience can still matter on the pitch. His presence represented a rare case in the Italian top flight.
Today Raul Albiol turns 41, thus closing a sporting life chapter filled with triumphs and challenges.
