Albertini: five training sessions to discover Maradona's heir in Messi

Demetrio Albertini, former Italian midfielder, spoke at the Trento Sports Festival, in the panel “The Lessons of the Field”, recalling his first meeting with Lionel Messi in 2005, when the Argentine was just at the beginning. After five training sessions, Albertini realized that the youngster was Maradona’s heir.

The First Meeting in Barcelona

Albertini was in the final stage of his career, while Messi was stepping into top‑level football. The former player recounted arriving at Barcelona and seeing Messi make his debut, the first player he met upon his arrival. There, the blaugrana president Joan Laporta asked Messi if he knew the newly signed player.

“I saw Messi make his debut: he’s the first player I met when I arrived in Barcelona. I’m embarrassed to say it, but Laporta said to Messi: ‘Leo, do you know this new player we’ve signed?’ And he replied: ‘Sure’. Then he asked me: ‘And you, do you know Leo?’ And I said: ‘No’,” Albertini said. After five training sessions, he thought: “There’s the heir of Maradona.”

Reflections on Club Identity

The former midfielder then explained what made that Barcelona special, focusing on the link between team and territory. “A sense of belonging is a value that must be defended,” he stated, also citing Milan, Bayern and Ajax as examples of rooted identity.

Albertini recalled his experience with Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan, describing it as epoch‑making, and emphasized that, like Barcelona, Milan also had a strong local component. “At Milan there were many Milanese or Lombards, at Barcelona many from La Cantera,” he added.

The memory links two different eras: Albertini’s, a protagonist with Sacchi’s Milan, and Messi’s, destined in the following years to become one of the most important symbols in football history.

The contrast between the young Messi, then unknown, and Albertini’s awareness, who recognized his talent in just a few training sessions, shows how first impressions can foreshadow great careers, while a club’s identity remains the true glue of lasting success.
