Alarm bells ring at Liverpool as new boss fails to turn tide

Liverpool’s poor campaign last season led to the dismissal of Arne Slot on Anfield Road, and his successor Andoni Iraola… has yet to spark a turnaround for the Reds as the club heads into a new season.

The club’s disappointing previous season prompted the firing of Arne Slot at Anfield Road, ending his short tenure after a campaign that fell far short of expectations.

Andoni Iraola… was appointed as the new head coach, but his early impact has not delivered the revival Liverpool hoped for, leaving fans and pundits uneasy.

Yesterday the Premier League side faced Leeds United in a friendly in Chicago; the Reds led 2‑0 at the break but eventually slipped to a 2‑4 defeat.

Two of Leeds’ four goals originated from long throws by Ethan Ampadu, a set‑piece weakness that also troubled Liverpool last season.

warned that Iraola “has problems on both sides of the field,” suggesting the issues are systemic rather than isolated.

The outlet added, “It was exactly the same story as last season, for example on set pieces. The first Leeds goal came from a mistake by Milos Kerkez, and uncertainty at the backs produced further errors.”

Iraola later substituted Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, commenting, “When Wirtz and Isak left the field, it seemed Liverpool would never score again. There is still much work to do before the season starts in three weeks.”

Speaking to the BBC, Iraola said, “Obviously the result is not what we wanted, but this is probably the most useful friendly we have played so far. Positive for the first half, negative for the second. We can draw conclusions and solve some problems.”

Dominik Szoboszlai also voiced concern, noting that “corner kicks and long throws were super important. We must fix that, otherwise we face another year like last season. Everyone must do their job on set pieces; we are only human and make mistakes, but we must respond. Before the new season we have two more friendlies left.”
