Ajax’s new guardian: How Ter Stegen reshapes the build‑up

Marc ter Stegen’s move to Ajax, confirmed on Tuesday 4 August, gives the Dutch capital side a 34‑year‑old German goalkeeper as a fresh building block, and promises to reinforce the back line while adding play‑making flair.

Jarno Verwei VIDe reported that the transfer was big news across Nederland and abroad, underscoring the significance of the signing for the Amsterdammers.

Reading the game and creating overloads

Ter Stegen is long recognised as one of the best keepers in the world, a reputation that predates his arrival in the Eredivisie. Waar Ronald Koeman junior may be hailed as the best Dutch‑born goalkeeper, Ter Stegen’s ability to scan, count and anticipate space sets him apart. His reading of the game creates minimal overloads in his own half and spots opportunities in depth.

Against SC Heerenveen, the German keeper acted as an extra central defender, directing the last line not only vocally but also with his ball‑at‑feet behaviour. He regularly dictates the direction of play, using dribbles, gestures and positioning after his passes to guide his teammates.

Passing that drives the attack

In the build‑up, Ter Stegen favours short, low passes that give his defenders extra time and space. When Heerenveen press and close a short option, he often already has a solution higher up the pitch, making him difficult for pressing attackers to read.

His timing is notable; by slightly delaying his pass, he allows midfielders to organise a better follow‑up. He also possesses a concealed, line‑breaking pass that can become a vital weapon for Ajax.

Beyond short play, Ter Stegen delivers precise long balls with both his left and right foot, placing the ball exactly where needed. This dual ability lets Ajax use the goalkeeper as an additional defender and as a conduit for varied attacking routes.

De coordination with defenders, midfielders and attackers still needs refinement, but the conditions are present. Wanneer the understanding improves, Ajax will have a goalkeeper capable of supporting the defence, dictating tempo and contributing to the build‑up.
