Ajax puts Champions League winner Ter Stegen in the Johan Cruijff Arena

Ajax has signed the 34‑year‑old German goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen, a Champions League winner and seven‑time Spanish champion who until recently was seen as an unattainable summer transfer. The German keeper is under contract with FC Barcelona for twelve years, but is now joining Ajax in Amsterdam. It remains to be seen whether he can stay at top level for an entire season.

Why Ajax is looking for a top goalkeeper

The club has been plagued for years by an injury crisis among goalkeepers, making the need for a reliable keeper urgent. Roel Brouwers hopes that Ter Stegen can once again showcase his footballing abilities and reflexes in the Johan Cruyff Arena. For Ajax this means a reinforcement of the defensive line that can improve the Eredivisie standing.

Brouwers' confidence in Ter Stegen

Roel Brouwers, who broke through as a young goalkeeper at Borussia Mönchengladbach ten years earlier, knew Ter Stegen as a teenager and played with him in 71 official duels. “Until recently I did not expect to see Marc in action in the Eredivisie, but given his injury record in recent years Ajax offers him a great chance to return to his former level,” he tells Guus Hetterscheid.

The former teammates are positive; one of them said: “He is actually far too good for the Eredivisie.” Brouwers emphasizes that the German keeper, who knows Míchel, Blind and Jordi Cruyff from Barcelona, was able to close the surprising deal through those connections.

Prospects and possible obstacles

Ter Stegen made his debut at 18 years old in April 2011 for Mönchengladbach in a local derby against 1 FC Köln; coach Lucien Favre defended the choice at the time with the words: “Anyone who still doesn’t see that Marc is really very good is blind.” The Fohlen won that match 5‑1 and Marc quickly grew into a calming presence in goal.

His career was marked by rapid development, a season in which the club fought against relegation, and a subsequent fourth‑place season. Despite his young age he was already “worth his weight in gold” for the club. “Marc could do more with his so‑called weaker leg than I could with my good leg. I know no keeper who is as two‑legged as he is,” Brouwers said.

For the upcoming season Ter Stegen must prove that he can leave his injury history behind and perform consistently in the Eredivisie. If he manages that, he offers Ajax a unique combination of experience and quality that can strengthen the club in the battle for the title.
