Ajax appoint Míchel as head coach on two-year deal
Ajax confirmed Míchel as head coach. The 50-year-old Spaniard signed a two‑season contract. He arrived from Girona.
Míchel replaces Óscar García, who finished the season as interim coach. Óscar García took over after Fred Grim departed. Fred Grim had succeeded John Heitinga earlier in the campaign.
Míchel had been Girona’s manager since 2021. He guided Girona to promotion to the Primera División and to a third‑place finish in 2024, earning Champions League qualification. Girona were relegated to the second tier the following season.
Earlier in his career Míchel coached Rayo Vallecano. He also managed Huesca.
Technical director Jordi Cruijff called Míchel ambitious and demanding. Cruijff said he is convinced Míchel will transfer his vision and intensive work method to the squad.
Míchel said he is proud to take the next step in his career with Ajax. He highlighted Ajax’s reputation for developing young players and pledged to restore the club to its proper standing.
