After Kimmich debate, Wirtz's position sparks new Musiala question

After Kimmich debate, Wirtz's position sparks new Musiala question

In the 2-0 victory over Serbia, Florian Wirtz, wearing the German national team jersey, played in the number ten position and delivered a goal as well as an assist. The 23-year-old attacking player was named man of the match and showed why his role in the team is so important.

Stefan Effenberg's clear stance

For Stefan Effenberg, the position in which Wirtz is deployed is decisive. He said: “We all agree where Flo Wirtz belongs, where he feels most comfortable. He showed it at Leverkusen, also at Liverpool, and he keeps getting better. And now also in the national team.”

Experts confirm the right role

‑Expert Peter Neururer emphasized that Wirtz finally plays in his favourite position: “Finally Florian Wirtz can play in the position where he is strong, where he grew up, where he has sometimes been called world‑class.”

Eintracht professional Timothy Chandler added: “He is a difference‑maker for any team he plays for. He is a free spirit. He must play in the number ten position, where he can move freely.”

Performance at Liverpool falls short of expectations

At the club FC Liverpool, Wirtz also usually occupies the number ten position, but after his €125 million transfer he has scored only seven goals and provided eleven assists in 55 competitive matches – too few for many experts.

Musiala's return raises new questions

Effenberg raised the question of what will happen to Jamal Musiala when he returns from his injury: “What happens to him when he comes back? That is a far more exciting discussion than the one about Kimmich.”

Under Julian Nagelsmann, Wirtz was deployed at the World Cup as a left winger to relieve Musiala in the attacking midfield. However, in the match against Serbia Musiala had to miss out due to injury.

Kimmich debate remains in the background

The long‑standing positional debate about Joshua Kimmich, who played as a right‑back under Nagelsmann and in central midfield under Jürgen Klopp, is now pushed somewhat into the background by Effenberg’s reference to Musiala.

The discussion about the optimal lineup shows that the German national team continues to search for the best use of its creative talents, while Wirtz has already proven that he can decide games when he is in the right position.
