Accusations against Unique Sports Group threaten OM and Irish football

As the Ireland‑Israel match looms, an accusation against Unique Sports Group, commissioned this summer by Frank McCourt to facilitate certain Marseille transfers, is stirring Irish football. Journalist Adrien Pittore claims the agency threatened Irish players supportive of the boycott, creating a controversy that could indirectly affect the Marseille club.

Mandate of Unique Sports Group for Marseille

According to L’Équipe, Frank McCourt approached Unique Sports Group in July 2026 to facilitate several departures to Marseille. The agency would not have a general mandate over the squad, but only specific mandates concerning certain players and particular markets.

Among the cases handled, Unique Sports Group is said to have been involved in the connection that led to Manchester City’s offer for goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, as well as a proposal from Newcastle United for midfielder Pierre‑Emile Højbjerg.

Threats towards Irish players

Adrien Pittore posted on X that Unique Sports Group had threatened Irish players wishing to boycott the Ireland‑Israel match, warning them that it could jeopardise their future ability to join English clubs owned by American investors.

The same tweet added that the players concerned were told that “they would no longer be able to play for English clubs owned by Americans.”

This accusation comes as more than 160 Irish athletes have signed a letter calling for a boycott of the two fixtures against Israel, before the Irish Federation ultimately decided that the matches will go ahead after a player vote.

One player, whose identity has not been disclosed, has already withdrawn from the squad, illustrating the tension surrounding the situation.

If the allegations are confirmed, they could spark reactions in Irish football and draw attention to Marseille and its American owner, Frank McCourt, just as the club is looking to finalize several transfers.
