Abate lifts Torino Comuzzo as defence rises with Coco and Comert

Ignazio Abate declares that Torino will field an entirely new defence as the club prepares for its Serie A opener against Milan, relying on the recently signed centre‑backs Comuzzo and Comert and the return of veteran Coco to anchor the back line.

The club placed the defensive unit at the top of its agenda this summer. The most active area of recruitment has been the back line, with goalkeeper Mascardi and centre‑backs Comuzzo and Comert arriving on the books. Abate believes these additions have already created a solid equilibrium. All signings comply with UE regulations.

Il Torino finished penultimate in Serie A last season, a campaign defined by a porous defence. The overhaul now replaces almost the entire back line that struggled to keep out opponents.

Pre‑season defensive record

During the pre‑season, Torino faced Burnley, Avellino and Carrarese in friendly matches. Across those three games the team conceded only one goal, a statistic that underscores the emerging stability.

Individual impact and roles

Nineteen‑year‑old Mascardi impressed with above‑average shot‑stopping, making three saves after the 90th minute against Avellino. Comuzzo arrived in optimal physical condition and quickly became a central pillar on the right side of defence. Comert displayed qualities that should raise Torino’s solidity rate, though he still needs to improve his physical condition.

Abate can now plan a two‑fold defensive strategy. First, he intends to restore Coco to his original role as the central pivot of a three‑man line. Second, he may rotate between Coco and Ismajli in the centre, allowing intelligent resource management.

"I see Coco as the central pivot," Abate said after the Coppa Italia round of 16 qualification. "He gives us great solidity and is not afraid to defend fifty metres from the goal at high speed."

"Back there we must be animals in the head," Abate added. "From that perspective we have many margins for improvement, but I am happy with how we have started."

The upcoming Serie A clash with Milan will be a decisive test for the revamped back line. Alieu Njie, who has returned to training after a muscular overload, is expected to be available for the Sunday fixture at 20.45, adding further optimism to Abate’s plans.

The contrast between a penultimate‑place defence last year and a unit that has already shown a steep upward curve highlights the ambition behind Abate’s project. If Torino can maintain this trajectory, the Milan encounter could mark the start of a new defensive era.
