Aarau's promotion hopes dim as David Acquah's red card aids Winterthur

FC Aarau's 2-1 defeat to FC Winterthur in the Swiss Challenge League on Friday leaves the club with three points lost and a ten‑man finish after Ghanaian defender David Acquah was sent off, having already been booked earlier in the match.

Winterthur take early lead

Antonio Marchesano put the visitors ahead by converting a penalty in the 15th minute. The early advantage forced FC Aarau onto the back foot from the outset.

Five minutes later, David Acquah received a yellow card, leaving the Ghanaian defender under pressure for the remainder of the first half. His early caution set the tone for a tense contest.

FC Aarau responded before the break when Serge Muller calmly slotted a penalty in the 40th minute to level the score. The equaliser revived the visitors' belief and hinted at a possible comeback.

However, Acquah's challenges continued; he earned a second yellow for a foul in the 56th minute and was dismissed. Aarau were reduced to ten men for the rest of the match.

Numerical edge yields winning goal

Winterthur capitalised on their superiority when Theo Golliard struck in the 76th minute to restore the lead. The goal proved decisive as Aarau could not find another answer.

The victory bolstered Winterthur's position near the top of the Swiss Challenge League table, while Aarau were left to reflect on a costly defeat. David Acquah has featured in three league matches this season, and Aarau will travel to face Stade Nyonnais on 9 October.
